The park in the Oklahoma Panhandle takes its name from Tesa, which covered a layer of black lava rock about 30 million years ago. The Nature Preserve is located 15 miles from the National Park and is part of the National Park Service's Black Mesa National Wildlife Refuge and boasts more than 1.5 million acres of open space. Lake Carl Etling currently has no water, but when it filled with fish from a well in 2006, it was expected to reach normal water levels.
