About Wallowa Whitman National Forest
The Wallowa - Whitman National Forest covers 2.3 million acres and stretches from Hells Canyon to Eagle Cap Wilderness at 875 feet. This diverse forest manages a sustainable ecosystem that provides habitat for animals and valuable forest products.
The forest stretches from the Blue Mountains to the rugged Walllow Mountains and there is a wide range of animal species, from bears, wolves, coyotes, owls, mountain lions, bears and wolves to wild boars and mountain goats. Wallowa and Whitman National Forests have been managed jointly by the National Forest Service (NF) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) since 1954. In 1908 Whitman created a combination of three forest reserves and in 1908 Wallowa NF was founded from seven forests and reserves.
