About Ecola State Park

Climb the rocky headland and fight to reach the whale in what is now Ecola State Park. This is the story of a whale that became stranded off the coast of New Mexico on the shores of the Pacific Ocean in the early hours of June 29, 2010.

Today, the asphalt road to Cannon Beach makes the park easier, but make sure you have your camera ready. On the way past the towering Sitka spruces, you suddenly get a breathtaking view of the Pacific Ocean.

Indian Beach, you can start on a new interpretation path that gives you the opportunity to walk in the footsteps of Captain. Ecola State Park offers beautiful views of the Pacific Ocean and a few miles of hiking trails, but the park has more to offer than a rich history. After feeding hungry adventurers and setting off on the miles of hiking trail, take a lunch break at the Indian Beach restaurant.

Keep a close eye on the many species of animals and birds that call Ecola at home and watch migratory gray whales in winter and spring. Indian Beach, surfers riding the waves, tidal pools waiting to be discovered and after a long day of exploring you will spend the night in a small and very primitive cabin on Tillamook Head.
