About Salt Springs State Park
The oldest growing hemlock tree, estimated to be 600 to 700 years old, is located in Salt Springs State Park, south of Silver Creek Trail. Also in the park are the Great Falls, a stream that flows into Silver Creek. The Friends of Salt Springs, Inc. also has a website and shares information about the state park and its activities and events.
The idea for the park was born in the 1960s when conservation-conscious citizens learned that the property was part of a family whose family had owned the land since 1848. The land would later be bought by Conservation, but Conservation bought it first, with the Commonwealth buying the first 129 hectares on August 7, 1973, for $81,500.
The salt springs are connected with a lot of folklore and history, and there is information about the folklore history of the area. A well-known story about salt springs has been published in an article in the Archives of Natural History and Archaeology of the New South Wales State Library.
At the time of settlement in Susquehanna County, the land was overrun by gangs of hostile Indians, and one of the roving tribes attacked the settlers "home. After killing several of them, he was wounded and captured, but his wife and children escaped and he escaped.
To escape the persecution, the kidnappers made their way downstream and followed a course until they arrived at the mineral spring that gave the town its name just before nightfall. They entered a second stream, which sprang out of a small ravine, and joined the first, which stayed under its protection. This spot, which is well suited to provide shelter, is a large square with a bench several hundred meters high, crowned by a dark forest that amplifies the gloom of the square. A black tower forms the centre of this square, which is about one - one - three quarters of a mile long and one - quarter of a mile wide.
The Indians tied their captives to trees and sat by the fire discussing the fate of the captives. The stern expressions did not suggest easy times, but the poor victims were too exhausted to listen to words or apparitions.
Finally the fate of the prisoners was decided and the cries of war against the Oneidas were heard. When the Indians recognized the song of their enemy, they hurried to the prisoners still tied to trees and put out the fire quickly. The moment of revenge was palpable, and in front of thousands of people in Salt Springs State Park, fate finally decided for each prisoner.
The surprise and joy was too great for her husband, and he sank back dead into her arms, and the straps that had tied him to her were cut. And she was free. Knowing that the Indians would soon find out how they were tricked, she rushed him to escape And they went into the ravine.
Unfortunately, her body was hidden in the place, but she returned to a friend who asked her to find his remains in the shadows and abysses that lay beneath the salt springs.
The park covers 400 hectares, most of which are forested and only very little cultivated. A small picnic area is located in the middle of a brook filled with trout, and toilets are located in the parking lot between the two streams.
Next to the picnic area there is a hiking trail that provides access to a huge hemlock tree. The path also overlooks the waterfalls and the constant rushing of the water can be heard. A walk across the bridge will take you to the remains of an old, overgrown forest and a small stream with some small streams.
While this area offers a short walk, there is also a longer hike if you want to do a long hike. Salt Springs State Park is located on the west side of Salt Lake City, Utah, just outside San Diego. The park is conveniently located just a few miles south of downtown San Jose, California and north of Los Angeles.
