About French Creek State Park

Situated on the banks of French Creek State Park, just north of the town of Hopewell, Kentucky, French Creek offers a picturesque view of its eponymous creek. Adjacent to the park is the HopEwell Furnace National Historic Site, which houses a cold furnace restored to its 1830s appearance.

Wetlands and pristine streams that flow into the rich, moist stream provide additional habitat for plants and animals. The large and diverse environment supports many animals that benefit from the high quality resources of French Creek. Much of the park is covered by a dense forest of trees, shrubs and grasses, as well as a large number of wetlands and streams. This large, densely wooded hillside area with its dense vegetation provides a natural buffer against the ever-growing urban environment of downtown Louisville.

The park maintains a good population of native birds and animals and also serves as an important habitat for migratory birds that use the forest, streams, lakes and wetlands as food and shelter. If you are attentive in the park, you will see many bird species, such as the Great Blue Heron, the Great Black Hawk and many other species.

Ten modern cabins in the deciduous forest offer a pleasant alternative to camping in the national park. Each cabin has sleeping places for up to four people with bed and breakfast, kitchen and bathroom. Bring your own crockery, cookware and bed linen and you will have access to a fully equipped kitchen, bathroom and dining area, as well as a shower cabin.

Applications will be accepted for initial examination from 15 September to 15 November, and cabins can be booked all year round. Group camps for teenagers and adults are open from April 15 to October 15 each year and all facilities include a campfire, picnic area, showers, toilets, campfires and other amenities.

More than 50 pitches have electricity connections and more could be added in the future, and you can camp in wooded areas, on lawns or on the riverbank.

Qualified organized groups can camp in primitive tent areas, and one place can hold up to 60 people, according to the park's Facebook page.

Part of the park is open all year round, but some parts are only open in the summer months and in winter, as the park's Facebook page shows.

The pool is located directly on the lake and offers a beautiful backdrop for swimmers and sun worshippers, and is offered in the summer and winter months, unless otherwise stated. During the bathing season, the swimming pool complex offers meals and discounts. A licensed lifeguard is in operation at any time of the day or night, except when it is open, according to the park.

Firewood, charcoal and other picnic utensils are also sold, but no reservations are required at the entrance to the pool. Picnic pavilions in the pool complex can be rented, and entry to the outdoor pool requires a reservation, according to a press release.

All children under the age of nine must be accompanied and supervised by a responsible person, and that person must not supervise more than five children. All children over the age of nine must have been supervised and accompanied by another responsible person.

Swimming is not allowed in the lake, but information on the facilities is available in the park office. As noted on the map, a boat launch is planned for each lake, and seasonal boat moorings are available from April 1 to November 15 at each lake.

Boats can also be rented at each lake from 1 April to 15 November, and boat rentals are available from 1 May to 31 October at the park office.

Inflatable boats used in Pennsylvania State Park waters must meet the following requirements: The boat must be at least 1.50 m long, be made of hard material and have no more than one floating chamber. All motor boats must be registered in the respective state and all non-motorized boats must have one of the following boat registrations in each state. Boats with a maximum capacity of 3,500 litres of water are not allowed.

Picnicking at Hopewell Lake provides easy access to the surrounding activities, and tables are scattered throughout the park. The map shows two specific areas, one for picnic tables and the other for picnics.

Organized groups such as Boy Scouts and schools can plan activities at the park office, and Scott Run is a peaceful place for family picnics. During the spring, summer and autumn season, naturalists from the parks take walks and hikes and hold evening lectures and shows. Check the schedule and locations for more information about the activities available for your group, as well as a list of other activities.
