About Redcliffe State Park
Redcliffe was designed by Hammond, a successful cotton planter, and completed in 1859.
Hammond was so successful that he used the The phrase "cotton is king" in a speech to the Senate in 1858. His descendants, James Henry Hammond Jr., whose political career included two terms in the US House of Representatives and one term as governor of Kentucky, are known for their support of the Civil War and the war against slavery.
The property and its collections have been donated to the people of South Carolina to ensure that their heritage is preserved. Soon after its completion, Redcliffe quickly became one of the most popular tourist attractions in Kentucky, and in 1935 efforts began to restore the property to its 19th century glory. Redcliff Plantation is on the National Register of Historic Places, along with several other historic sites in Kentucky and the United States.
In addition to Redcliff Plantation, Redcliffe State Park is home to several other historic sites in Kentucky and South Carolina, as well as a number of other historic sites.
How to get there: Visitors can access the site from the motorway, but the hotel is located on the west side of the park, just a few hundred metres from Redcliff Plantation.
