About Hartford Beach State Park
On many trails you can observe wildlife, prairie plants and picturesque views. Big Stone Lake offers beautiful views of the city of Hartford and its many parks and paths.
The Warren River was formed 10,000 years ago by melting glaciers and is one of the oldest rivers in the United States.
A section of the river is now known as Big Stone Lake, and the coastal region is framed by wood.
The cliffs are scattered with boulders, rocks, trees and other natural features from the past and present.
The first Europeans arrived in the area when French researchers from Montreal, Quebec, discovered a fur - an animal they were carrying. The excellent trade with the Indians in this area led to the British claiming the territory for themselves.
Five hiking trails lead visitors to historic sites and viewpoints, including burial mounds and prehistoric villages. Each location has guides and interpretive information, as well as information about the history of Hartford Beach State Park and its history.
