About Fort Sisseton State Park

The fort, built in 1864 on the prairie hills of Coteau, rarely reminds one of the western border.

Originally a Border Army outpost, the historic landmark has been restored and is open to the public. The name "Fortress" comes from the nearby Sisseton Indian tribe and is now part of a picturesque state park that shows the history of this area. Go back to the site where the border fortress of Sisseton still stands and you will go back in time.

The fort, originally called Fort Wadsworth, was selected to provide access to the Sisseton Indian Reservation and the US Army Corps of Engineers for military training and training.
