About Caddo Lake State Park

The water in Caddo Lake State Park is rich in flora and fauna and abundant in wildlife. Although the vegetation is so lush, much of the lake is actually a labyrinth of sand and bayous ponds.

The park offers a variety of outdoor activities such as hiking, canoeing, kayaking and fishing, as well as camping. The quaint huts built by the Civil Defence in the 1930s are also popular.

Caddo Lake State Park takes its name from the sprawling boxwood swamp maze that spans 26,000 acres of cypress swamp. The lake is home to 71 species of fish and nature lovers can enjoy a variety of animal species such as white-tailed deer, coyotes, raccoons, foxes, ducks and much more. There are a number of hiking trails, as well as canoeing, kayaking and fishing, and there is even a canoeing park with a kayak and canoe launch site.

The lake is the only natural lake in Texas, although it was dammed in the early 20th century when oil was found.

The original improvements to the park were made by the Civil Conservation Corps (CCC) and the old dam was replaced by a new one in 1971. The legend of the Caddo Indians traces the origin of this lake back to a huge flood. Scientists believe the lake was formed when a flood from the Red River blocked massive logs that flowed into the Cypress Bayou watershed and formed a lake.

Company 889 started in June and November 1933, company 857 was completed in October 1934 and March 1937 and company 888 in September 1937.

The US Army had 15 barracks built and the Army Exhibition Hall was converted into a group recreation hall, which is now used as a picnic area, recreation center and recreation area for park visitors. There is a path between the original picnic areas and latrines, and there is also a parking space for the campsite, picnic tables and picnic benches.

The cabins are about 1 / 2 mile from the water, and smoking is not allowed in the cabin, but pets, tents and fireplaces are not allowed in the cabin areas.

Bed linen and towels are provided, but there is no cooking utensils and cutlery except for a small amount of food and water for cooking.

In front of the hut is a picnic table at hip height - in front of it a high barbecue bench, behind a picnic bench. The unit consists of a half cabin, half a duplex, with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a kitchen and a bathroom with shower and toilet.

The kitchen counter is 2 inches lower than a standard counter and the dresser is 3 inches higher than a standard dresser. The barrier-free bathroom has a bathtub with handrail and ADA shower, the kitchen with sink and a bathroom with shower and toilet.

Unless otherwise stated, customers must: Bed linen for the 5th and 6th person and bed linen for the 4th to 6th person. In addition to the set-up fee, a daily entrance fee is charged.

Campers are not allowed in this area, but pop-ups and small trailers are allowed as long as they are at least 5 feet from the entrance.

Tents are not allowed in this area, but pop-ups and small trailers are allowed as long as they are at least 5 feet from the entrance. Generators with more than 1 kilowatt hour of electricity (1000 watts or more) are not allowed.

A picnic table with electricity must be outside and have a picnic table and electricity inside, but no more than 1 kilowatt hour of electricity (1000 watts).

There are no harvesting regulations for fishing on the Louisiana side of Caddo Lake, Louisiana, but they differ for many species. For more information, call 676-7594 or visit the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries website. On the Texas side, the lake is used for white perch, which is the most abundant and second largest perch in the state of Louisiana.

The lake also supports the quality fishing of cappie, whitefish and sunfish, and chain pickers, a small cousin of pike, are sought after and available by anglers. Canals, blue flake heads and catfish are available and offer good seasonal fishing opportunities. The giant mullet is one of the most popular fish species in Caddo Lake State Park and the largest fish on the Texas side.

Although white bass fishing is good all year round, spring is the time when trophy fish can be caught, with March being the most productive month. Claw fishing is also most productive in the summer months, while a large number of legal fish are available for harvesting, regardless of the size of the fish.

The main fishing season for perch is in areas with currents, and the best habitat for the fish is underwater water water and vegetation. Chain pickers are good at this time of year, but late spring and early summer is the time to catch black bass, white bass and other fish species.

Nearby attractions include the historic center of Jefferson, a famous trading center in northeast Texas in the first half of the 19th century. Nearby is a large lake, near which there is an area where the current of the water reaches its highest point, about 1,000 feet above sea level.

A number of providers offer boat tours on the lake, but the timetables are weather-dependent and cruises are limited to a few hours per day.

The historic Jefferson Tour Headquarters provides the following information about the many events, including the annual Caddo Lake State Park Tour and Jefferson County Fair. The park is located 15 miles northeast of Marshall, go east on Park Road 2 and then west on State Road 3 after 2.5 miles.
