About Fannin State Park
The historic site of the Fannin Battleground State is the oldest national park in Texas and one of the largest national parks in the United States. After the state acquired the site in 1914, the area was under the control of a state control board, and a 1965 Texas law placed the site under the care of Texas parks and wildlife. The park was opened in the same year and has been open to the public as a public park since its opening on 1 July 1965.
Mexican General Jose Urrea capitulated, Colonel J.W. Fannin capitulated with 284 men, and the men were told to be treated like prisoners of war. Mexican army and capitulated to Mexican General JoseUrrea on July 1, 1916, in the battle of the Rio Grande Valley.
Seven days after his capture, General Santa Anna had behaved in such a way that he had him executed as a traitor in front of his own soldiers.
Twenty-eight escaped, while 342 were massacred in what is now Goliad State Historical Park.
Nearby attractions include Tips Park, run by the City of Three Rivers, and the Grand Canyon. The park is located on the west side of the river, north of Interstate 95 and south of I-95.
