About Jamaica State Park
Jamaica State Park, which now covers 772 hectares, was completed in 1969 and opened to the public in 1971. In the past, the area was home to a few small farms and sawmills, as well as a number of small towns and villages.
The West River Railroad travels through the park on its way to the New York-New Jersey border, the Hudson River and then on to Manhattan.
The railway was in operation until the early 1900s, when floods destroyed most of the line. The old track bed is now used as a hiking trail leading to the West River at Ballberg Dam.
