About False Cape State Park

False Cape State Park is located south of Virginia Beach and is one of the oldest and most popular national parks in the United States. Access is limited to hiking, biking and boating, but is within the Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge. The park offers a wide variety of activities, from hiking and cycling to fishing, camping, kayaking and fishing.

The name of the area comes from the fact that its landmass resembles Cape Henry and attracts boats into the shallow waters. In the 19th century False Cape gained a reputation as a ship cemetery and houses many of Virginia Beach's oldest and most famous ships.

Survivors of the shipwrecks built a village, church and other buildings out of cypress wood that was washed ashore from the wrecks.

Access to False Cape State Park is prohibited because it is located on land in the Back Bay area of the Cape Cod National Wildlife Refuge. Those who want to visit the park during the day must take a boat or canoe to Back Bay or walk along the beach path of the refuge into the park. The inner way is closed from November 1st to March 31st, the outer way from April 1st to June 30th.

To get an idea of the park, the Back Bay Restoration Foundation runs a tram that runs from Little Island City Park through the wildlife reserve and lets visitors drive through the parks. You can also take a ride in a specially designed vehicle that minimizes your impact on this particular environment.

The tram offers tours but is not available for overnight guests, so guests staying overnight in the refuge must hike, cycle or canoe or boat.

Day and overnight guests are requested to read all warnings about the park before visiting it in order to inform themselves about the preparations. All visitors must comply with all safety regulations and regulations on the site and respect all safety regulations and the safety of all visitors.

The area got its name because its landmass reminded of Cape Henry and attracted boats into the shallow water. In the 19th century False Cape acquired the reputation of a shipping cemetery and in the 20th and early 21st century the reputation of the largest cemetery in North America.

Survivors of the shipwreck founded a village, church and other buildings made of cypress wood that was washed ashore from the wreck.

From the turn of the century until the 1960s, False Cape was home to a renowned hunting association that exploited an area rich in water bird resources. A converted hunting lodge is one of several historic buildings in the park, as well as a museum and visitor center.

The park's development began in the late 1950s with the creation of False Cape State Park by the Massachusetts Department of Natural Resources. It was recommended that the land along the Atlantic Ocean be made available for public use as a recreational area and for fishing and hunting.

The campsites are located in four different areas of the park, separated by large distances. Camping is allowed all year round and no reservations are required, but the campsite is only available for one day a week and a maximum of three days a month.

For information about the campsites, please contact the False Cape State Park office at (225) 225-3867 or call 225-3867. The park offers a variety of camping facilities, including campfires, picnic tables and picnic benches. Drinking water is available at the campsite, as well as in the park's water treatment plant, which is available daily.

False Cape Landing Campers must bring an empty container to transport water to the water source, and water not suitable for drinking is available at the campsite.

Stoves can be used for cooking, but open fires are not allowed, and False Cape Landing State Park does not have fireplaces or other forms of fire protection.

The passage through the Back Bay Wildlife Refuge is only permitted during the day and only on days with strong winds, heavy rain or high tides.

Guests must bring two copies of their confirmation letter and ask local businesses to accept them if necessary. Campers must receive their confirmations and information packages during the camp here. If there is not enough time to receive the package by post, campers must fax the information if they have time to receive the package by mail.

Some must be placed on the dashboard of the vehicle, others are placed on construction site markings and some are placed on your vehicle's front door.

Self-guided hiking trails: Five trails, including Barbour Hill, with a total of 10 km of trails in the park, from the parking lot to the entrance.

The park's location behind a barrier wall allows visitors to observe the wooded marshes, wetlands and other natural features of the False Cape during a visit. From the parking lot, you can hike to the top of Barbour Hill, the highest point of the park, as well as the entrance to False Cape.

Continue on Interstate 64 to Indian River Road East, then turn left onto Newbridge Road and walk 13 miles to the entrance of False Cape State Park on the west side of the park.

Parking fees must be paid between Memorial Day and Labor Day, and parking is available during the day at Back Bay Wildlife Refuge - for use only.
