Chippokes Plantation State Park is one of the oldest farms in the United States and hosts a vibrant historical exhibition set against a backdrop of historic buildings, historic farms and historic houses.

The plantation has maintained its original boundaries since the 16th century and has a variety of managed gardens and native forests. The formal gardens of Chippokes Mansion highlight the historic buildings of the park, such as the historic house and the original farmhouse. It also offers traditional park facilities, including a visitor center, picnic areas, a museum and an outdoor amphitheater with outdoor seating.

Chippokes Plantation State Park is operated by the Department of Conservation and Recreation in partnership with the Chippoke Plantations Farm Foundation. The foundation was established by the Virginia General Assembly to build, manage and maintain the model farm and is funded by grants from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the Virginia Department of Natural Resources. In 1619 William Powell, the first governor of Virginia and founder of the plantation, received a scholarship from his father Thomas Powell.

Indian chiefs who were friends with the early English settlers, and the plantation and the adjacent streams were named after them. The first evidence of the possession of this land is the discovery of a large number of chip pokes in the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Under Colonel Henry Bishop in 1646 the plantations were expanded and the adjacent stream was named after Chippoke, an Indian chief who was a friend of the former English settler.

In 1854, Albert Carroll Jones built what is now the Chippokes Mansion, overlooking the historic James River. The Italian structure was built of bricks, plastered and painted over the river's façade and plastered.

Legend has it that the property survived the Civil War until Albert Jones sold his fire to both sides after the war. Chippokes was once the scene of the largest plantation fire in North Carolina history and the second largest in the United States. The plantation changed hands several times before it was bought by the family of Charles E. Jones, the son of Albert and his wife Mary, in 1918.

Mr. and Mrs. Stewart moved to Chippokes and put a lot of effort into restoring the property and creating a detailed history of the plantation. After the death of Mr. Jones and the loss of his wife Mary in the Civil War, Mrs. Stewart donated Chippyokes Plantation to the Commonwealth to preserve it in its entirety. She hoped that the farm would be transformed into a park and preserved by interpreting the everyday life of a farm through the centuries. The Department of Conservation and Recreation operates Chippingstoke Plantation Farm Foundation in partnership with Chippingstoke Plantation State Park.

The foundation was established by the Virginia General Assembly to build, manage and maintain the model farm. The Foundation's work is funded by a general meeting, with corresponding private donations from the State of Virginia, individuals and businesses. For an additional fee, a conference room and kitchen are available, which can be used for weddings, meetings and special events. This park is called Chippingstoke Plantation State Park, a state park on behalf of the Chippingstoke Plantations Farm Foundation.

The shelter has a barbecue, picnic tables and access to toilets, but until then, cancellation fees will be charged. The visitor center overlooking the James River is the main entrance to Chippewa Plant State Park, south of the park entrance.

The park has hiking and cycling trails, which are accessible for people with physical disabilities for miles through the historic surroundings. The park also offers rides for children, such as the Chippewa Plant Bike Ride, a one-mile bike ride from the park entrance to the James River.

The Chippokes Farm and Forestry Museum opened in June 1990 and uses more than 600 antiques to interpret early rural life in America. During the Christmas period, the manor house is decorated with decorations from the Victorian period, and in spring special tours of the house and gardens are offered as part of Garden Week. In the summer months, guided tours are also offered, as are guided tours along the paths of the park.

The seven-story complex is open during the summer months as part of Chippokes Plantation State Park's Garden Week and during the winter months for guided tours.

Route 10 leads you from I-95 / I - 295 at Hopewell and continue north on Route 10 until you turn right at the flashing lights.

After about 15 miles, take the Route 10 West exit at Smithfield and turn right onto Alliance Road (Route 634). Take I-64 East / 460 West and the park entrance is three miles to the left, turn left and exit in the parking lot. Turn left onto Route 634 (Alliance Road) and take the Route 10 (West) exit at Smithfield.

From the river ferry terminals in Scotland, turn left and follow the road (Route 10) to the left, then right onto Route 12 (Northampton County Road). Turn left onto Route 634 and continue to the park entrance. You will be parking in the parking lot on Alliance Road, approximately 4 miles from the entrance to Chippewa Plant.
