About Fort Worden State Park
The park is perched on a high cliff overlooking Puget Sound and offers great views of Lake Washington and the Pacific Ocean to the east and west.
The historical fortress is an ideal setting for seminars, conferences, retreats and family celebrations. As a military fortress in the 19th century, many of the historic buildings have been preserved and you can meet in historic Victorian salons, which are over 100 years old and have carpeted floors. The centre offers a wide range of activities for children and adults, from hiking, cycling, canoeing and kayaking to hiking and camping.
Fort Worden guards the entrance to Puget Sound and the park offers a pleasantly casual atmosphere in a historically formal setting. The post, erected in the late 1890s, became part of a fortification system designed to prevent an enemy fleet from reaching the US Navy's Pacific Fleet, then the largest naval base in the world.
Construction began in 1897 and lasted until the fortress was closed in 1953, and the property was acquired as a state park in 1955. Fort Worden was named after Rear Admiral John L. McQueen and dedicated to him in honor of his service in World War I.
