DeSoto Lodge was established in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corp. as the headquarters of the De Soto State Park Conservation Corps, the state's first conservation organization.
At that time it was used as a group lodge and dance hall, and in the main lobby the front and middle stone with the word "lodge" can still be seen. In the late 1970s, the building was expanded and the original part of the building was converted into a mountain restaurant, which is still in operation today. A motel was built next to it, and above it a motel, a hotel and an office building.
Each room has a telephone and cable TV, and motel guests have free access to the pool during the summer months. The rooms have a telephone, cable TV and in the winter months a swimming pool with a swimming pool and a hot tub.
The seasonal outdoor pool opens on 23 May 2009, the summer pool on 1 July 2010, the seasonal outdoor pool on 1 August and the summer pool on 1 September.
Lifeguards are available and pool parties are possible during the off season (25 people are allowed). To book a pool party, call the parking office at (888) 762-5555 to get a free parking permit, or call in advance to make an appointment.
The hotel is located at DeKalb County Lake Resort & Spa in DeSoto State Park. Weiss Lake stretches over a coastline of about 426 miles and is located on the east side of DeKalb Lake, north of the National Park.
There are three picnic shelters that can be reserved and easily accessible picnic tables are conveniently set up. A picnic table for barbecues is located near the picnic area, and a large playground is located in the picnic area.
The $1 per person per day use is collected at the gate of the picnic area, and $2 for each additional day of use, or $5 for a total of $10 per year.
The DeSotos pool is located to the left of the picnic area, and the nature center next to it is also ideal for children. The nearest playground is in the parking lot behind the Country Store, just outside the park entrance on the east side of De Sotos. A hotel is also located near the picnic area and country store, about one mile south of de Soto State Park.
De Soto State Park has about 15 km of hiking trails, including a 5 km mountain bike trail. The terrain on the trails varies from easy to challenging, but easy to ride is the Family Loop, which is located right on the trailhead near Lost Falls. It is still mostly flat and rough terrain, and bikes are also allowed near the cabins along the road.
A helmet is compulsory for children under 16 years of age and for adults a helmet must be worn on the back of the bike, as well as on the front and back, but not on the sides.
For maps and information, visit the De Soto State Park website and the Alabama State Park website.
The path was designed, built and constructed in collaboration with the State of Alabama, the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DNR) and Alabama Parks and Recreation. The road's construction and materials were funded by grants and donations from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, the National Park Service, and federal and local governments.
The Boardwalk is a 360-yard trail that can be ridden and enjoyed by people of all skill levels. The promenade offers hikers a unique perspective on the habitat in the area at any time of the year and it is a beautiful place to see the flowers of the mountain gloryberry.
The flowering period usually lasts from March to November, but a walk in mid-April will be enveloped in the scent of wild azaleas. Azalea cascades forming ponds give a beautiful view of the mountain peaks and their blooms in full bloom.
This small but beautiful waterfall is located on the orange path and falls about 5 m deep. The path is steep and moderate, with some climbs, but there is plenty of space and shade along the way, as well as a small waterfall.
Indian Falls is about one mile from the trailhead and is easily accessible via a small footpath, and a wooden walkway leads to the top with a beautiful view. This interesting waterfall falls about 20 feet into the small gorge that is located just below the Azalea Cascade Trailhead.
Lodge Falls falls about 25 feet and is very precipitation dependent, but this easy to find waterfall is just outside DeSoto's "Lodge."
The best time to see this small 5 foot waterfall is during the spring and winter season, but the terrain can be moderate to slightly strenuous. The best view of the waterfall is only accessible by walking through a small gorge, then walking briefly along the yellow path and arriving again next to the hut.
Lost Falls is one of the most popular waterfalls in DeSoto State Park and the best waterfall in the park.
This waterfall is perhaps the hardest to find in De Soto State Park, as it is really lost when there is no water.
Little Laurel Creek, which then flows into the Little River at the top of the hill and flows west into the river for a short distance.
The West Fork of the Little River flows downstream through the park and crosses DeSoto Falls, the largest waterfall in the state of Georgia and the second largest in North America. This clean waterway was built from NW Georgia to NE Alabama and flows through Weiss Lake in Cherokee County, Alabama. It then flows west through De Soto State Park and leaves the mountain at Little River Canyon Mouth near the park. Few rivers in America flow almost the entire length of a mountain, but the small river does when it falls more than 90 feet into the gorge. The De soto Falls are located at a depth of about 1,500 feet, about 2,000 feet above sea level and a few feet below the summit of Mount Everest.
Swimming, mudflats and fly fishing are popular activities along the Little River that runs through DeSoto State Park. De Soto State Park was developed by the Civil Conservation Corps in the 1930s during the Great Depression.
Within the park there are several buildings that still bear witness to hard work and commitment. The lodge and other buildings were built in a quarry found in the white tracks, and the drilling traces of dynamite blasts are still visible if you look closely enough.
The quarry can be reached by taking the White Way from the end of the farm car park and following a moderate to difficult climb. The CCC's artifacts are on display in the De Soto State Park Visitor Center and the Park Visitor Center, as well as in a museum.
DeSoto Falls are located in De Soto State Park, Alabama, about 30 miles north of Birmingham and south of County Road 89, which runs through the park. The beautiful waterfall is formed by the Little River, which drops about 100 meters into the gorge. At the beginning of the 20th century, the first hydroelectric dam in North Alabama was built at the falls to supply electricity to a hydroelectric power plant and a water treatment plant.
