About Kachemak Bay State Park

Alaska's first and only wilderness park covers more than 1,000 square miles in Kachimak Bay. The oblique rock formations in and around the bay are evidence of the movement of the earth's crust.

The exceptional landscape of the park, highlighted by the constantly changing weather conditions, provides the backdrop for a high-quality recreation. Visitors to this park will find a wide range of activities, from hiking, camping, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, mountain biking and fishing to kayaking and paddling.

The tidal zone provides natural conditions for marine studies, and visitors often observe sea otters, seals, porpoises and whales. Kachemak Bay is bordered to the north and south by the Atlantic Ocean, the Gulf of Alaska and the Pacific Ocean.

The many bird species that inhabit the bay, including eagles, hawks and puffins, make it a popular area for bird watching. Mammals on land include sea otters, seals, porpoises, whales, sea lions and sea turtles.

From the tree line, skiers and hikers will find miles of glaciers and snowfields, and the view of the surrounding forests and mountains, as well as the bay itself, is superb.

Hunting and fishing are allowed in the park, as well as hiking, skiing, snowshoeing, kayaking and other outdoor activities such as snowmobiling.

Halibut Cove Lagoon Public Dock is a floating structure that can moor a boat up to 26 feet long. From the pier, guests have access to the beach, water and a variety of outdoor activities, including kayaking, canoeing, fishing, hiking and snowshoeing.

The space is limited and is available according to the principle "first come, first served." A limited number of places are available per day and person.

Located on a rocky spot overlooking the lagoon, you can expect to carry equipment up to 500 feet to the jetty.

The cottage with 2 bedrooms is equipped with kitchen, bathroom, kitchenette, dining room and small living room. A wood-burning stove is available for heating and water should be prepared for drinking.

Water is also available when the generator is running at the ranger station, but the water is not available at this time of year and should have been treated.

The log cabin sits on a rock overlooking the lagoon and dock. It is expected to carry equipment up to 250 feet to the jetty.

The one-room cabin is equipped with a cooker, hot plate, small kitchen, bathroom and shower. When the generator is running at the ranger station, water is available, but it should be treated for drinking.

In the cottage there is also a wood-burning stove for heating, as well as an electric stove for cooking and water for bathing and cooking.

The cabin is designed for disabled persons who need assistance on the ramp from dock to jetty or who need assistance on the ramps, docks and jetties.

Individuals can reach the hut via a short path or hiking trail, and there are also two berths at the side of the trail. The log cabin overlooks the lagoon and is perched on a rock and a long, steep staircase leads to the beach.

The one-room cottage is equipped with kitchen, bathroom, dining room and a small living room and dining area. One room is equipped with two beds, one for the family and two for guests.

Water is available from a nearby stream and should be prepared for drinking, and a wood-burning stove will be available for heating in the summer months and also in the winter months.

China Poot Lake, also known as the recreational lake, is located in Kachak Bay State Park on the west side of Chachama Bay. China Poots Lake is a 2 km long lake with a maximum depth of 2.2 metres and can accommodate up to 6 people. It is the largest lake in California and the second largest in North America.

Water is available in the lake, but should be treated for drinking water and wood - kilns are available for heating. An air taxi can land on the lake and the jetty is near the hut, and a wood-burning stove and a fireplace for cooking and drinking water are also available.

Public access to the Elchtalhütte is directly at the Elchtalschleife, private access from the hiking trail on the north side of the lake.

About 1.5 km from the station, the trail leaves the China Poot Lake Trail and heads north on the Poots Peak Trail. From Pooting Peak, follow the moose loop trail to the north side of the lake and then back to China Poot. There is a small parking lot at the southern end of this road, about 1.5 miles south of China and about 3 miles north of Pots Peak.

Water can be taken directly from the stream in front of the porch or from a stream in the parking lot.

Drinking water is treated, filtered, boiled and boiled for at least 30 minutes before drinking and up to one hour after drinking.

A small wood-burning stove is available for heating and nearby is a small annex, as well as a picnic table, picnic chairs and a stove for cooking.

Camping is allowed in most areas of the park and a number of websites have been developed that can provide information about camping, hiking, fishing and other activities, as well as a list of hiking trails. Although the route is normally cleared only in mid to late June, cabins are still available in the summer months.

The public runways have an aluminum frame, are white and have a maximum length of 40 feet. The iron ring around the buoy makes it easy to tie up to a ship and is designed for use as a landing buoy as well as fishing and other recreational activities.

The park can be reached by boat from Homer, which is about 1.5 miles south of Homer Beach, although there is no road to the park, but it is easily accessible via the Homer Bridge.
