Ouachita National Forest in western Arkansas and southeast Oklahoma offers visitors a variety of natural and recreational opportunities for recreation, hiking, camping, fishing and hunting. There are several developed recreational areas as well as a number of scenic hiking trails and trails for hiking and camping.

Most of the recreation areas are open from April to September, but selected areas remain open during the summer months from June to October for hunting, fishing, camping and other activities.

The prices on the information page of this website are valid until 1 January 2005. Fees are levied in many federal recreational areas, including state forests. Details on this page can be found by selecting from the list in the field on the right.

The Ouachita National Forest is being restored as a recreational area as part of the state's reconstruction and improvement program. Over 80% of all collected usage fees will be refunded to the resort, with the rest to state and local governments.

Fees vary depending on the type and level of services in the area, such as camping, hiking, fishing and other activities. In the past, up to 15% of the revenue went to the state treasury for the Ouachita National Forest and the Arkansas Department of Natural Resources.

Ouachita National Forest is the oldest and largest national forest in the south and covers an area of about 1.6 million hectares. The forest covers the entire state of Arkansas, with the exception of the towns of Little Rock and Littleton, and parts of Fort Smith, Fort Payne and Fort Worth. It includes only a portion of the national forests that are in multiple ownership, such as the Arkansas National Wildlife Refuge and Ozark National Park.

The Forest has sponsored a children's fishing derby for 10 years and its fishing program is one of the largest in the United States with more than 1.5 million square miles of fishing.

There are plenty of fishing opportunities in the forest and adjacent reservoirs, and the lake area includes recreational fishing lakes and ponds with a total area of over 700 hectares. The rest of the area is home to more than 1,000 hectares of fishing and hunting opportunities. We cannot guarantee that you will catch fish, but we can tell you that the fish are out and will stay out for the rest of the summer and into autumn.

This spring flows through the forest with clear water and clear flowing streams, rivers, lakes and ponds, as well as a variety of wildlife.

Take US-259 to the intersection of Oklahoma Highway and head east on US 259 for breathtaking views of UOachita National Forest.

The observation tower is open to the public daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. from July 1st to October 31st and from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Hiking and design trails stretch for less than a mile and cross the entire forest from west to east. The trail system includes hiking trails, design trails and associated facilities, as well as a variety of hiking, cycling and cross-country trails.

Each path varies in difficulty, but some of the biggest challenges are steep climbs, steep descents and steep turns, and rapid descents and descents.

Wolf's Pen Gap is also a popular trail for ATV riders, offering a wide variety of terrain, from steep climbs and steep descents to steep turns. There are 31 miles of single-lane track, considered by many to be the best of its kind in the nation. The easiest paved trail to interpret is the 1,500 foot Wolf's Pen Gap Trail, one of the longest single tracks in North America.

There are also some paths that are not equipped, such as the sophisticated campground, but check with your local forestry office before traveling. Some of the trails are open to the public and are available for ATV riders, while others are equipped with disposable beds.
