Los Angeles would stretch as far as Phoenix, but so would the San Bernardinos, which serve as a protected oasis. The huge rock face is topped by a city the size of L.A., home to the largest population in the United States and the second largest city on the planet.

It is this obvious discrepancy that makes the park so unique, where desert cacti face the snow mountains in the distance, and snow on the peaks in the distance. Hikers can explore paths that lead from the pine trees of the forest into a beguiling landscape full of desert flowers. Rangers, however, have their hands full, as the forests receive more visitors than any other national park in North America, according to the US Forest Service.

We can thank President Benjamin Harrison for providing 737,280 hectares of land to stop a devastating forest fire that destroyed the mountain's watershed. Due to the large amount of water in the forest, there is enough water in the San Bernardino area to supply more than 1.5 million people with water. The forest is bordered by several San Bernardino county roads that run along Interstate Highway 10 and Interstate 5.
