About McArthur-Burney Falls Interpretive Association

The heart of the park are the 430-meter high Burney Falls, which are not far from the town of McArthur but just a few hundred meters away. It is located in the part of Lake Brittany that includes the historic city and its historic district, as well as the city of Garthursburg.

Burney Creek springs from an underground spring in the park, and additional water comes from a spring connected to a fog-filled pool. Lake Britton, which approaches the majestic waterfall, flows into the lake.

The landscape of the park is created by volcanic activity, erosion, weather and streams. The volcanic region is surrounded by mountain peaks and covered with black volcanic rock, basalt, and is covered by a thick layer of volcanic ash, ash and ash from previous volcanic eruptions. Porous basalt rock, which formed millions of years ago, holds back rainwater and snow melt and forms large underground reservoirs. From these reservoirs, water flows into Burney Creek, where it flows into the waterfalls at the entrance to Garth - Burney Falls Memorial State Park.

Burney Falls is named after pioneer Samuel Burney, who lived in the area in 1850. The McArthurs bore the name of the settlers who arrived in the late 19th century, the Garth family, a group of Texas settlers.

Their descendants were responsible for keeping the waterfall and the nearby land from development. They bought the property and donated it to the state in the 1920s, and their descendants, the McArthurs, were instrumental in keeping it and the nearby lands out of development until the late 1970s.
