About Montaña de Oro State Park
Nature lovers and backpackers will enjoy the solitude and freedom that can be found along the paths of the park. The park features secluded sandy beaches, coastal plains, streams, gorges and hills, including the 1,347-foot Valencia Peak. There are also mountain biking and horse riding trails as well as a variety of hiking and cycling trails.
The name of the park, mountain of gold, comes from the golden wildflowers that bloom in spring.
The most famous beach is Spooner's Cove campsite with its sandy beach, sand dunes and beautiful mountain views.
Wildlife in the park includes black-tailed deer and black oystercatchers, as well as birds of prey such as black bears, coyotes, foxes, wild boars, raccoons, owls, deer and wolves.
The park includes primitive and equestrian campsites, and the weather can be changeable, so multilayer clothing and outdoor equipment such as hiking boots and gloves are recommended.
