About Mount Tamalpais State Park

Mount Tamalpais is located north of San Francisco's Golden Gate, and the snow-capped Sierra Nevada mountain can be seen from the entire Bay Area, from San Mateo County to Marin County.

On a clear day, visitors can see San Jose Bay, the Santa Cruz Mountains, Mt. Diablo and San Pablo Bay. In winter, it is considered one of California's most popular hiking and biking trails and a popular tourist destination.

The Miwok Indians along the coast had lived in the area for thousands of years before the Europeans arrived, and in 1770 two explorers christened the village Tamalpais, which was later renamed MiWok Tamalspis. After the 1849 gold rush, San Francisco grew and more people began to use Mount Tamal Pais for recreation.

A railway line was built and the way extended, later a railway line was completed, which became known as the most crooked railway in the world. In the 1930s, after a wildfire damaged the tracks, it was abandoned and a road with the same name as Mount Tamal Pais State Park was rebuilt.

For more than a century, hikers and visitors from all over the world have been hiking on the slopes of the Tamalpais. The park has no flush toilets, but there are a number of toilets and showers in the park, as well as a toilet and shower house. Since it was conserved as a national park in 1928, hikers have been drawn to the summit, and a hiking trail leads from the parking lot of the State Park to the summit.

If you're lucky, you can experience the "magic river," which Bay Area hikers call the Tamalpais River, a tributary of the San Joaquin River.

The Tamalpais Tavern, which welcomes guest dancers on Mount Tam, and the Muir Woods Railway, which is known for its spectacular views of the San Joaquin River and its scenic hiking trails.

Just outside the scenic surroundings of this large mountain are redwood dotted Potrero hills - lined with streams and oaks - overlooking the San Joaquin River and its tributaries. These paths lead to trails leading to the wooded watershed areas of Mount Tamalpais State Park and Muir Woods Railway, as well as a number of other trails.

As you can see from the barbed wire-rimmed fire observation tower, it is as beautiful as any peak in the world, even if it is only a few hundred meters above sea level. Motorists can drive to the summit of Mount Tamalpais State Park and Muir Woods Railway, which often means crowds at the summit.

Those who want to stay on the train to the summit of the Tamalpais can extend the ascent and descent with extended ascents and descents. But the trail, Railroad Grade Fern Creek, is more fun, offering a bit of everything.

The East Peak Summit acts like a visitor centre with a snack bar, which is normally only open on weekends, but is open daily in summer. It also offers great views of Tamalpais State Park and the San Francisco Bay Area.

The Cushing Memorial Theater in the park was built in 1930 by the Civil Defense. The natural stone amphitheatre seats 3,750 and was opened in spring 1913.
