About Samuel P Taylor State Park

Samuel P. Taylor State Park is covered in a wooded landscape and features a variety of wildflowers and trees including oaks, birches, elms, pines, cedars, redwoods and oaks. The park has a wide variety of wildflowers native to California, including buttercups, milkmaids, Native Americans, brushes, etc. The flowers and trees include the Californian sequoias, Californian pines, pineapples, orchids, hickory, clover, balsam, hazelnuts, ferns, chamomile, thyme, lavender, lilac, rosemary, lemon balm and many others.

The most common animal in the park is the black-tailed deer, but there are also raccoons, striped skunks and grey foxes. Silver salmon and steel head spawn in a variety of waters, such as rivers, streams, lakes, ponds and streams.

For a less strenuous visit, many visitors consider the Devil's Canyon a place to relax in the shade of trees overlooking Mount Barnabe, Canada's highest peak. The park offers hiking trails and fire trails that make it easy to reach the top of Mt. Barnaby. From the park entrance, a paved bike path leads about two miles to the southwest corner of Samuel P. Taylor State Park. This path is almost flat and follows the old Northwest Pacific Railroad on the right.

Fishing is permitted at nearby lakes within the Marin Water District, but a state fishing license is required. Fishing is also permitted in the San Francisco Bay and Marin County Water District, and fishing is permitted at a nearby lake within the Marin's Water Districts.

The park is named after Samuel Penfield Taylor, who came to California from Boston to try his luck during the gold rush. Silver and steel-headed salmon spawn in the stream and in a small number of other streams and rivers.

Taylor bought 100 hectares of woodland along Papermill Creek, built a paper mill and established the paper manufacturing process. He made square newspaper bags from waste paper rags from San Francisco, a novelty for the time, but he actually found gold, received it and entered the timber business. Taylor built paper mills in the area with the help of his son-in-law, John Taylor.

He built one of the first campgrounds in the US to offer tents as a recreational activity, and in the 1870s and 1980s the area hosted more than 100,000 visitors a year from the United States and Canada.

The park is located on the west side of the Columbia River, north of Portland, Oregon. From the park entrance, an asphalt cycle path leads about three kilometers to the north and from there to a parking garage. The trail is almost flat and follows the old Northwest Pacific Railroad to your right.
