About Mohawk State Forest

The State Forest is one of the most scenic woodlands in Massachusetts and offers visitors a taste of true wilderness in a rustic setting. A clear, cold river runs through the forest, overlooking Boston, the Boston Harbor and the Boston skyline to the east.

The forest supports a wide variety of plants and animals, as well as a large number of birds and other wildlife. For excellent trout, explore the picnic area that lasts half a day, or explore one of the many trails along the river, such as the Great River Trail and Riverfront Trail.

The state forest is located on the Mahican - Mohawk Trail, a historic Native American footpath that connects the Connecticut and Hudson river valleys. Part of this route is now open for hiking, as is the Mahican Mohawks Trail.

The rugged hills of the reserve offer magnificent views, and the black spruce moors offer visitors the opportunity to marvel at the unique plant communities. In total, the White Memorial Foundation has contributed 2,900 hectares to the acquisition of this forest since 1921.

Take Route 4, take Route 8 to the exit and then Route 7 to Route 5, then Route 6 to Interstate 95 and Route 1. From the I-95 exit on the north side of the freeway, you can take Route 4 back to your car at the entrance to the Moahwk State Forest.
