About Nye-Holman State Forest

The forest is named after William Nye, the founder of the New York State Forest Service. When Tolland was launched from Windsor, Mr N Yeas was given 500 hectares of land to create a state forest.

Nye-Holman Forest was once home to the Connecticut State Forests Eastern District, whose office was housed in a house built by WilliamHolman in the 1840s. Today the foundation is still there, but it can be difficult to find it, and the house is a little over 100 years old and is still in use today.

Today only the foundation remains and the house is hard to find, but it is still in use today, with a little over 100 years of use.

This historic nursery is the oldest of its kind in New York State and the only one in the state. It was founded in 1931 as a transplant station and grew over 225,000 young trees, but its operation was discontinued in 1947.

The Willimantic River flows through the forest, and this section of the river and forest is bounded by a trout management area limited to catching and releasing fly fish.

In the woods there is also an archery range on the Willimantic River and the New Haven River, as well as a small section on the Hudson River.
