About Greenwell State Park
In 1971, the 166.6-hectare site was given to the state of Maryland for use as a public park.
The state subsequently acquired the adjacent 430-acre Bond property and joined the two to form the existing park, and Greenwell is the first US state to have its own parking system.
It is open to the public all year round - and for full information visit the official website.
Maryland State Park is part of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection (DNR).
The Gray Access Trail requires a 1.5 km round trip from Greenwell State Park to Gray's Landing and a 0.45 km journey through soybean fields. The Gray Access Trail passes through a 1,500-foot soybean field.
The Blue Trail turns right and leads through open fields of corn, forest on one side and forest on the other.
Along the way you can see white deer - tail deer, elk, coyotes, foxes, wild cats and other wildlife. Under the trees you can see the river Patuxent and horses, mountain bikes and hikers are welcome.
Turn left and follow the Red Trail, which is 0.73 miles long, and walk mainly through the deciduous forest. Watch out for grey squirrels that jump in and out of trees such as White Oak and Red Maple. The trail is suitable for hikers, mountain bikers and horses, but watch out for coyotes and foxes, as well as grey squirrels jumping between the trees of the White Oak, the Red Maple, etc.
The Red Trail, about one mile long, connects to Greenwell State Park at the southern end of the park, south of Red Mountain.
The yellow trail (1.15 miles) is accessible by following the path from the parking lot at the southern end of Greenwell State Park. Turn left onto the Red Trail and turn right onto the Yellow Trail, and as you drive down the path, you will find a meadow on your left.
This field is home to mice, moles, marmots and rabbits, and to the right of it is an inviting forest with a variety of plants, animals and birds, as well as a few birds.
The trail mainly leads through deciduous forest, where you can find a variety of plants and animals as well as some birds of prey. The White Trail requires a 2 km circular walk from the parking lot to the hiking trail, but is allowed for hikers, horses and mountain bikers, with a short hike back over the main parking lot of the park.
At one point, you can see Cuckold Creek from the path, and occasionally you will encounter ducks splashing in the water or, if you are lucky, a blue heron wading through the wetlands. This 1.1 mile trail, which runs along the banks of the Patuxent River, is a 1 km loop through deciduous forest, with a short walk back across the main parking lot to the trail. Hikers, horses and mountain bikers are welcome on the White Trail and other trails in Greenwell State Park.
The path is only accessible to pedestrians, as it is located in an ecologically sensitive area and the terrain in the forest is challenging. The path is accessible from the main parking lot on the east side of the park and winds through corn fields and woods.
There are many side spurs that allow visitors to overlook the tidal ponds, which are home to a great variety of animals and birds. It runs along the simple banks of the Patuxent River and is accessible from the main parking lot on the east side of Greenwell State Park.
The White Trail connects with the Grey Access Trail, and both are pure hiking trails, but the easier - not - hunting ground is connected by a 45 mile path with a trail system throughout the estate.
This barn is one of the oldest in St. Mary's County and is located in the old barn on the west side of Greenwell State Park, near the entrance to the White Trail.
