About Calvert Cliffs State Park

The cliffs that dominate the Chesapeake Bay coast in Calvert County for 30 miles formed more than 15 million years ago when warm, shallow seas covered all of southern Maryland.

More than 600 species of fossils have been identified, with teeth from different shark species being among the most common fossils.

In addition to the interesting cliffs, the park offers a variety of outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, swimming, fishing and playground equipment. Near the picnic area is a 1-hectare fish pond, which is closed until further notice due to the ongoing construction of the Calvert Cliffs State Park Trail and the establishment of new hiking trails.

A Maryland freshwater fishing license is required for anyone 16 years and older, and a Maryland sport fishing license is required while you are fishing in the bay or on the beach.

The gazebo can accommodate about 50 people and is available through a reservation system. Picnic tables and barbecues are available when you first arrive and serve.

13 km of marked hiking trails are open to the public, but bikes are only accessible from the road. There is a 12 km cycle path from Calvert Cliffs State Park, with a 1.5 km trail on the west side of the park.

Take Route 2 or 4 to the parking lot of Calvert Cliffs State Park on the west side of the park, at the intersection of Route 3 and Route 4. The address is on Route 1, south of Calverts Cliff Road, in the town of Clifton Park, Maryland.
