About Purgatory Chasm State Reservation

Purgatory Abyss, a unique natural monument, runs a quarter of a mile through a granite wall that rises 70 feet. The abyss, which is popular with picnickers and mountaineers alike, is said to have originated in a dammed ice-age meltwater reservoir. A path leads to the bottom of the gorge, where it flows into Purgatory Lake, the largest lake in the state.

The Purgatory Chasm State Reservation is located in southeast Massachusetts and the park is just 1,000 feet from the road. Take Rt 146 South for about 4 miles to the town of Sutton and take Mass Pike to Exit 10A. At the end of the ramp, turn right onto Purgatory Road and turn right onto the right end ramp onto Purgatories Road. At the Purgatoria Road exit, turn left into the State Park parking lot and then right onto Mass. Pike.

Take Rt 146 North or South for about 4 miles to the town of Sutton and take Mass Pike to Exit 10A and then right onto Mass.

The park is about 1000 metres from the road, so take the exit to Purgatory and turn right into Purgatory at the end of the ramp. South of Worcester, take Rt I90 to Rr 290 South and take Exit 12 to Brosnihan Square across the road.
