About Huron National Forest
Huron and Mani National Forests cover public lands in northern Michigan's Lower Peninsula. They provide habitat for fish and wildlife as well as a variety of animal species such as elk, elk, deer, wolf and wolf.
Northern Michigan's forests are rich in history, but logging peaked in the late 19th century and forests were quickly cut down and cleared. Huron National Forest was founded in 1909, and the two state forests merged administratively in 1945.
No one wants healthy forests back, but the Forest Service has worked with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the US Army Corps of Engineers to return the land. We have made great progress in restoring the area and much remains to be done, much of it through our partnership with you.
