About Thousand Hills State Park

As Kirksville's population grew in the 1950s, the city tried to increase its supply of fresh water.

Thousands of acres of forest were created to serve as the city's reservoir. Today, the 3,215-acre park offers visitors the best of what northern Missouri has to offer.

While the reservoir supplies water to the community, the natural features of the park remind us of a time when northern Missouri was covered in forest and savannah. Visitors can experience these natural wonders along the paths of this park, and a central feature of the park is the lake created by the damming of Big Creek.

Hiking, mountain biking and nature adventures are popular rural activities, and the cool waters of Forest Lake offer a variety of recreational activities including swimming, fishing, boating and skiing.

The petroglyphs in the park show shelters and petrochemicals left by the inhabitants of the area more than 1500 years ago. Thousand Hills State Park has seven duplex cottages overlooking Forest Lake. If you want to extend your stay, you can stay in one of these cabins with pantry to experience everything that the park has to offer, from hiking and biking to fishing and camping.

The cabins are air-conditioned and heated, and the cabins are open from March to November and from October to December. Bed linen and towels are provided, as well as a hot shower and hot water supply for the first night.

Check-in is at 3pm and check-out at 11am, and each unit has its own kitchen and dining area, as well as a bathroom. Kitchen equipment includes a stove, oven, dishwasher, microwave, hob, sink, refrigerator, freezer, pantry, refrigerator and freezer.

For each additional person over four years, up to a maximum of six people in a room, an additional $5 per room will be charged. Tents and tents are not allowed on the hut grounds, but extra beds and cots are available during the day for a small fee.

The office closes at 21: 00 every day, but in case of late arrival it is recommended to call before 18: 00 to make arrangements. Photo identification and credit cards are required for check-in; photo identification or credit card is not required for check-in.

Water recreation is one of the most popular activities in Thousand Hills State Park, and the lake itself is the largest freshwater lake in the United States, with a 17-mile shoreline. In the marina you can rent all kinds of boats, including kayaks, canoes, pontoons and other small boats.

The parking shop at the marina offers utensils and rents boats, kayaks, canoes, pontoons and other small boats from the jetty, as well as other boats.

Lifeguards work full-time, changing rooms and showers are also available, and a snack bar on the beach offers lemonade, chips, water and sweets. The beach at Thousand Hills State Park is also open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. from September to October.

The paved boat ramp, which is about three meters wide, is located in the immediate vicinity of the pantry in the park. For possible closures, contact the boathouse or call the park office at 660-665-6995.

Private boats require a city permit, outboard engines over 90 HP may not be operated in Waldsee. Private boats with engines over 60 HP, such as a 30 HP boat, are allowed to sail in the boathouse of the park, but private boats without engines over 80 HP require a city permit.

Catch a whale under 18 inches and you must return to the water unharmed and immediately after catching it. Thousand Hills State Park offers a wide variety of fishing opportunities, which are filled with a variety of whale species, dolphins and other marine mammals.

One person may not use more than three poles per pole, and no fish may be caught in the same area as carp caught with a gig, longbow or crossbow without trot or pitcher being permitted.

No bullfrogs or green frogs may be caught in the same area as carp, fish or other fish without trot or pitcher being allowed. Live bait caught or caught with live bait and the use of live bait for fishing purposes are prohibited. The 90 HP may not be operated in Waldsee and no more than three poles per pole, no less than two poles in an area.

Closed accommodations have an occupancy of 75 persons and can be reserved for $50 per day or in advance for a fee. Accommodation is available for camping, hiking, picnicking, canoeing, kayaking, fishing and other activities. Thousand Hills State Park offers a variety of accommodations, including campgrounds, cabins, lodgings, hotels, RV parks and RV parks. All accommodations are open to the public for stays of up to four days and for the duration of the annual park season, but all can be reserved in advance.

The accommodations include tent sites, cabins, lodgings, hotels, RV and RV parks as well as RV parks. Please behave and have a good time in Thousand Hills State Park during the annual park season and summer months.

Reservations are $40 per day and the remaining three open accommodations can be reserved for $30 per day. Reservations for campsites, cabins, lodges, hotels, RV parks and campsites all cost $40 per day.

Open shelters, if not reserved, are open to all visitors who park in the park on weekends from 10 am to 5 pm and from 1 pm to 4 pm and are further away from the children's playgrounds. We have an outdoor barbecue every Saturday from 17: 30 to 19: 00 and can accommodate up to 36 - 48 guests.

First - come, first - served, free of charge and open to the public on the first Saturday of the month.

Conservationists in the park regularly offer interpretative programs during the spring, summer and autumn months. These programs include nature walks, nature lectures, bird watching, hiking and nature walks.

The exhibition also displays petroglyphs or petrochemicals that the inhabitants of the park are said to have left more than 1500 years ago, as well as a variety of other artifacts.

Thousand Hills Trail was developed in the early 1990s as part of the Forest Lake State Park expansion. The trail is about five kilometres long and is signposted clockwise with a red arrow. It passes through the last large - dental esp populations in this state, as well as a number of small - dental esp and wildflowers, and passes the Great Lakes National Park and Lake Superior National Wildlife Refuge, the largest of its kind in North America. Western parts of this trail follow the shores of Forest Lake and provide a great opportunity to observe waterfowl and other wildlife, along with scenic views of Lake Ontario and the lake itself.

Thousand Hills State Park has three short recreational trails: Red Bud Oak, Hickory Ridge and Oak Ridge Trail. The route from Red Oak to Hickary is only allowed for hiking and the use of 4x4 vehicles; the other two routes, the Black Oak Trail and the Blue Ridge Trail, are only open for walking and cycling.

The other two routes that are exceptional for mountain bikers are the Thousand Hills Trail and the Oak Ridge Trail. The 2 km long circular trail, which is located on the west side of the Waldsee, is a short walk from the main entrance of the park at the northern end of the parking lot to the hiking trail.

The Cove Loop and Thousand Hills Trail follow the southern end of Forest Lake and both trails are perfect for beginners and average riders. A new 6 km route connects Craig to Oak Ridge Trail, considered one of the best trails in the park for mountain bikers and hikers. The Craig connects with Craig and is connected by a new 5 km long circular trail.
