About Stephens State Park

Stephens State Park flows into the river at the foot of a steep hill on the west side of the park, right next to the main path. An easy, rocky path follows the river to a rest area in a shady area, and the boulder is surrounded by a small group of trees and a few small rocks in the shade.

The original canal was 90 miles long and stretched from Newark to Phillipsburg and was used to transport coal and iron throughout the state. The canal could not keep up and was eventually abandoned, but not before it had been used as a means of transport for coal, iron, etc., in the States.

Electric and gas engines are allowed to drive up and down the Musconetcong, but a person must have a permit for a vehicle with an electric and gas engine. All toilets are within walking distance and the toilets of the park are open to the public at all times.

The Musconetcong River offers excellent trout fishing and is fished by the Department of Fish and Wildlife in the spring.

Tables, charcoal grills and sanitary facilities are available in the picnic area, which is equipped with picnic areas. About 400% of the total area is designated as a hunting area, with about 1,000 hectares available for hunting, fishing, camping or other activities.

Picnic facilities are designed to allow picnic huts to be reserved for groups, but on public holidays, such use is only permitted with the superintendent's permission. The upper picnic area is only available for the first - come, come, first, one-time - use. Picnic shelters also offer large groups access to picnic areas, picnic tables and sanitary facilities.

Reservations for picnic areas are handled by the individual parking offices. For more information, please contact the Park Office at 1-888-743-5555 or the Park's website.

The Highlands Trail runs through Stephens State Park and is two miles long and flat, steep and rocky. The trail is marked for horse riding, with a 2.5 km loop around the main path of the park and a 1 km loop to the parking lot. Stephens State Park offers a wide selection of hiking, biking, horseback riding and other outdoor activities.

Naturalist Lori Tournillon will present a variety of informative and educational programs. Stephens State Park invites you to join its Fall Festival, the annual celebration of the park's natural history.

Participants will meet at the park's visitor center on Saturday, October 14, at 9: 30 a.m., and participants can meet in the parking lot at 10 a.m. The calendar of events includes all the current programs at Stephens State Park. All programs are sponsored by the parks free of charge, but in case of bad weather, please contact your park office to find out if programs have been cancelled or postponed.

The village from the early 19th century has been restored and the mill complex still functions as its original function as a tourist attraction.
