About Viento State Park

The park's name is "vee - en - toe," which refers to its location on the southern edge of the San Bernardino Mountains.

Viento was the first railway line in the area to be built, and where once there was a railway station, one of the best kept secrets of this gorge is its great camping spot. There are free places when all other campsites in the area are full, but reservations are not accepted. Camping is offered by two types of camping sites: First - come, first served and first come - first serve.

Rangers offer interpretative programs and educational activities for children and adults, such as hiking, canoeing and kayaking, on summer weekends.

Visitors and campers can brace themselves for horns day and night, and there are barrier-free toilets. Viento is located on the west side of the San Gabriel River, south of San Luis Obispo County.

A section of the Historic Columbia River Highway leads to Viento State Park, offering the best windsurfing in the gorge and scenic views of Mt. Hood, Columbia and Columbia Falls. Vientso has the highest elevation of any national park in Oregon and is one of only a handful of national parks in Washington.

When you get the chance to visit, imagine an old Ford Model T turning around the corner and there is no traffic around you.
