The Michaux State Forest is located in Adams, Cumberland and Franklin counties and is one of the largest state forests in the United States. Named after a French botanist sent by the French royal couple in 1785 to collect plants for the royal garden. His son Francois-AndreMichaux was known for discovering and identifying a wide variety of flowers, shrubs and trees.

The land, which is now the Michaux State Forest, was owned by a large iron company, and the largest iron furnace was an oven. The iron in the furnaces was processed into a forge by digging iron ore in open-cast mines and pig iron.

During the Revolutionary War, cannonball stoves were used to fire cannonballs, which were then used in the Civil War and the Battle of New Orleans. The iron industry needed large land holdings cut by wood converted into charcoal and used to make fuel for iron furnaces, but it disappeared when it could no longer compete with new technologies and rich ore deposits. In 1902, the first nursery was established in Mont Alto, and the Michaux State Forest had many early timers in Pennsylvania forestry. The Pennsylvania State Forest Academy was founded in 1903, only the second nationwide to train professional foresters. It was the only state forest academy in the United States and one of only a few in Europe.

Some of the rangers had previously travelled to Europe for training, others to the US for the first time in their professional careers.

The Michaux State Forest, which covers more than 85,000 hectares, is managed for purposes benefiting the local community, the state of Michigan and the U.S. Forest Service. The proceeds of the wood are used to produce wood products that meet the needs of millions of people and help the local economy.

Drinking water is perhaps Michaux's most valuable resource, and many communities rely on pure water for their municipal water supply.

The Appalachian Trail is a continuous, marked trail that stretches from Mt. Katahdin in central Maine to Springer Mountain in Georgia and crosses 14 states. The trail covers a distance of 228.8 miles and is one of the longest trails in the USA and the world.

The Michaux State Forest is north of the Maryland State Line, about 39 miles of which are forty - five of which are in the state forest.

The remaining six miles divide the forests of Weiser and Delaware State, and the trail is marked by two different signposts.

One is white, rectangular and normally shines through the trees, and the second is black and white with a red cross on it and an arrow on it.

Hikers who set off off off the main trail have the opportunity to see different conditions in the forest and encounter a greater variety of plants and animals. In state forests, the Appalachian Trail is located in a buffer zone where logging is limited to remove dangerous trees that pose a threat to public safety. In buffer zones, different types of cutting processes are used to ensure a continuous supply of wood products and to improve the quality of the various wildlife habitats.
