About Palo Duro State Park

The land was bequeathed to the family in 1933 and it was the hard work of dedicated people that officially opened Palo Duro Canyon State Park on July 4, 1934. In 1934, the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) was sent to the Palo Duro Canyon to develop the first public park west of the Rocky Mountains in the United States. Palo - Dero Canyon State Park covers 1.5 million square miles, roughly the size of California.

Palo - Located in an area called El Llano Estacado (coordinated plains), Duro Canyon is considered part of a short grass prairie, as the increased moisture at the bottom of the canyon supports a wide variety of plants, including grasses, shrubs, trees and grassland, as well as a number of wildflowers. The most common plant species include sage, sageblower, elk, bighorn sheep, wild boar, coyotes, peas, pheasants, mules, thimble, elk, horse, buffalo, cattle, sheep and goats. Several juniper species are also common, such as the redfoot throat, blackberry, jalapeno, chamomile, rhododendron, cedar, redwood and sage.

Due to its diverse habitat, Palo Duro Canyon is home to many animal species, including many bird species such as the squirrel owl, coyote, pheasant, wild boar, elk, bighorn sheep, buffalo, cattle, sheep and goats. Other species include the white mule, the western diamond rattlesnake, the black coyote, the prairie dog, the mountain lion, the grizzly bear, the cougar, the big cat, the wolf and the mountain goat, as well as a number of other species.

Longhorn oxen can be seen along the main road, which is one of the most popular hiking trails in Palo Duro Canyon State Park. Known for its large herds of cattle, horses, sheep, goats and long horns, it is also known for the large number of wild boars and other wildlife in the park, and therefore visitors are encouraged not to feed these animals.

The Palo Duro Canyon stretches from the canyon to Silverton and is formed mainly by a series of canyons that crossed it less than a million years ago. The slopes of the gorge reveal the colourful natural history of this area, and the gorge is bordered by the San Juan River and its tributaries, as well as the Rio Grande.

There is a 250 million year old gypsum cloud, which is only visible in a few places in the gorge and is visible from the Quartermaster formation. Directly above the quartermaster is the Tecovas formation, which consists of yellow-grey lavender-colored clay sandstone. Together with the neighborhoods, they form a colorful triangular slope, the "Spanish Rock," and form the base of the Palo Duro Canyon and the gorge of the San Juan River. The Quartermasters Formation can be seen on the west side of this slope, as well as on its east side and along the south side.

Besides the Tecovas, you can admire the formations of Truijillo and Ogallala, the gorge of the San Juan River and the Palo Duro Canyon.

Ogallala is made of hard cape rock, composed of sand, mud, clay and limestone, and truijillo of sand and mud. Humans have inhabited Palo Duro Canyon for about 12,000 years, but humans first inhabited it about 10,500 years ago. At first Clovis and Folsom lived in the gorge and hunted large herds of mammoth and giant bison. Later, the San Juan and its tributaries exploited the rich resources within the gorge.

Palo Duro Canyon was a battlefield during the Red River War of 1874, and it is believed that an early Spanish explorer discovered the area and named the gorge after the Spanish term "hardwood," which is Palo Dero. American discovered it in 1872, when Captain Marcy ventured into the area on his expedition to the San Juan River Valley.

Mackenzie captured the Indians living in the gorge, first capturing 1400 horses and later destroying the majority of the herd. The Indians could not escape and capitulated and were taken to a reserve in Oklahoma.

From 1876 to 1890, most of the gorge belonged to J.A. Ranch and was operated by Col. Charles Goodnight. Get to know the people, animals and plants that call this area home, as well as the history and history of Palo Duran State Park.

Canoncita Ranch was added to Palo Duro Canyon State Park, and Texas Parks and Wildlife acquired the Palo Duran Ranch and the rest of the land in the canyon.

Visit the visitor center at the edge of the canyon in the park or visit the visitor center at the end of Palo Duro Canyon Road, near the entrance to the hiking trail. Activities at this park include hiking, cycling, camping, fishing, horseback riding, climbing and other outdoor activities.

The shop is located in the visitor centre and offers books, pottery, jewellery and educational materials in the gorge. This rustic stone building was built in 1934 by the CCC as the headquarters of the US Army Corps of Engineers (USAC) and the National Park Service.

Heavenly Land is performed at the Texas Panhandle Heritage Foundation's outdoor theater in Palo Duro State Park. The music includes many old country hits that are interpreted in a contemporary way, including some of the most popular songs from the early days of country music in the United States. The show will be accompanied by the Heaven's House Band and Joyful Noise, with a special guest appearance by singer and songwriter Billie Jean King.
