About Brighton State Park
The Town of Island Pond experienced its heyday during the Depression, when the railroad passed through Portland, Maine, to Montreal, Canada. The main attractions in the area are the trees - overgrown slopes, the fast-flowing rivers and streams and the picturesque views of the Atlantic. Land in the northeast and southeast of the Islander Pond has virtually no roads and no village, but is home to a number of small towns and villages, as well as a few small farms. The winding roads through the deep parts of this area offer interesting detours and are numerous and will remain so.
The road was full of railway workers and hardy loggers from all over the region, and the population was much larger than today. The 13 tracks passed through the city, but today only two tracks remain and a unique wooden bridge that once crossed it has disappeared.
The heritage of the railway is still visible in Brighton State Park and other parts of Essex. Interestingly, the island pond is bordered by the old railway tracks and the original tracks from the early 20th century.
