About Green Mountain National Forest
The Green Mountain National Forest is one of the six - said - mud and mud national forests in the United States. The most popular time of year is autumn, when the mountains are on fire, but there are also some of the most scenic hiking trails in New Hampshire.
Summer blooms and wildflowers can be seen on many forest paths, and winter combines the green of spring with the dark brown of autumn and winter. The forest breaks the grip of winter when leaves appear and summer blooms, but winter is brought together with the bright colors of summer by the cold, humid weather of autumn and spring.
The mud season is usually short but intense, so mountain biking or hiking on wet trails is not desirable at this time of year. US Highway 7 leads from Rutland into the woods, and many people enjoy a first day of fishing.
