About Fort Okanogan State Park

Fort Okanogan State Park is a park located on a steep hillside overlooking the Columbia River. The park's interpretation center overlooks the city of Fort Okansogan and the river, as well as the city of Columbia City. It has a visitor centre, picnic area and interpretation centre with café, picnic tables, toilets and picnic areas.

David Stuart of the Pacific Fur Company founded the colony in 1811 and named it Fort Okanogan. In 1821, the Hudson's Bay Company bought the fort from David Stuart and his family for $1.5 million and rebuilt it as a fortress.

Fort Okanogan overlooks the site of the original fort overlooking Mount Rainier and the Columbia River, as well as the river, Pacific Ocean and Lake Washington.

The word Okanogan is derived from the name used by the local Indians when they used their name for the fort and its location on the Columbia River and the Pacific Ocean.

The park has protected picnic tables and campgrounds in the park since the early 20th century, most recently in Fort Okanogan State Park. Picnic areas are available, which are served first, and a picnic area in front of the fortress and on the riverbank.

The Interpretation Center offers a variety of exhibits, including the Fort Okanogan State Park Museum, which shows the history of the fortifications and fortifications in the park, as well as other historical artifacts. The Interpretation Centre is open daily from 10 am to 5 pm and includes a museum, a visitor centre and an interpreting centre for children and adults. It is open from July to September every first Saturday of the month from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
