About Turn Island State Park

Turn Island State Park is a state park on the west coast of New Jersey, north of the city of Newark. The island is home to a number of historical sites, including a lighthouse, a museum and some historic buildings.

The park is open all year round - year-round for tents and day tents - berths are available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with tents available for $5 per person or $10 per day for tents with day berths.

The island was originally mapped as a headland on San Juan Island by the Wilkes Expedition in 1841 and was named Point Salsbury. It was named Turn Island on a map of the British Admiralty from 1858-59, and it is found on the US Navy's Pacific maps from 1853-54.

Turn Island is a refuge for wildlife and visitors should stay on the designated trails and not disturb wildlife. Turn Island State Park, and the length of stay can be extended by staying at one of the three campsites or at one of the other two campsites, for a rate of $5 per person per day.

The island is accessible only by boat from Point Salsbury, the main entrance to the park; check-in is at 13: 00; engine-powered electric generators operate from 11: 30 to 18: 45 on weekends; quiet times are 22: 00 to 06: 30; check-in times are 14: 20 to 14: 30.

The main access area to the island is in the bay northwest of the harbour buoy; the park has three jetties. The bay to the west has a reef that extends over a small island, and it is not recommended to use the beach.

The berth fees are payable all year round from 1 pm to 8 am, and boaters must register and pay upon arrival. When a boat is chasing another boat, the boater must pay the fee at the entrance to Turn Island State Park, not at the shore.

The park is accessible only by boat and is located in Turn Island State Park, south of the coast, on the east side of Turn Street.

The nearest access point is at Jackson Beach on San Juan Island, and the nearest mainland access is Washington Park in Anacortes.
