About Fort Simcoe State Park

Fort Simcoe State Park is a 200-acre park on the western edge of Fort Simcoe, Ontario, Canada, north of Toronto. The park is primarily an interpretative attempt to tell the story and development of Canada's first military base in Canada and to give an insight into the life of the local Indian culture.

ForSimcoe is located in an old oak grove irrigated by natural springs and houses a military complex founded in the 1850s to maintain peace between settlers and Indians.

The park has been included in the National Register of Historic Sites and the main feature of the park is its rich interpretation, which examines the clash of civilizations that took place when settlers and Indians competed for the same territory. As a fortress at that time, the site is home to an Indian campground, where many paths cross, such as Fort Simcoe Indian Campground, a popular destination for campers from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Fort Simcoe State Park and Indian Campground are open to the public every day of the week from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., 12 noon on Saturdays and Sundays and 12 noon to 5 p.m. on weekends.

The park is located in the present state of Washington and has been used by various Indian bands since the 1850s, which today form the Yakama Indian Nation. The fort is located in the Yakama reservation and has been used as an operational base for various tribes since 1850, such as the various Indian gangs that are formed today, as well as for the US Army Corps of Engineers (US Army).

The fort was built in the late 1850s and was in operation for three years, but was handed over by the military to the Yakama Indian Agency in 1859. The fort was then converted into an Indian school and managed its affairs as a complex until the early 1900s.

The park was founded in 1956 and a group camp overlooking the fortress and the fortified grounds can accommodate up to 50 guests and six campers. Most services are within a few miles of the park, but Fort Simcoe has a small bookstore in the center.

The park offers a variety of amenities including covered picnic tables, fireplace and picnic benches. Toilets, running water and ample parking are available free of charge, but reservations are possible by calling 509 - 874 - 2372.

Tables are available according to the "first come, first served" principle, and the entire park is of interpretative value. The park has an interpretation centre with picnic table, interpreting centre, picnic tables, fireplace and picnic benches. While the three officers "buildings are open to the public, the park does not have its own parking lot or underground car park.

Guided tours for the rest of the year can be arranged by phone at 509 - 874 - 2372, group tours are available for a fee.

Five of the original buildings are still standing as fortresses and several other buildings have been faithfully reconstructed. The houses are furnished with antique furniture, and five of them are still standing, along with the fortress itself and the various buildings.

A free family weekend in June celebrates the military and the history of Fort Simcoe. Events can include a live history specialist, a military parade and other activities for children and adults.

You can call the park at 509 - 874 - 2372 or in advance. Fort Simcoe offers a wide range of activities for children and adults, from hiking and camping to canoeing and kayaking. The wildlife is seasonal, but bird watching is possible year-round, as well as fishing, hunting and other outdoor activities.
