About Monongahela National Forest
The extensive network of trails in the Hinterwald is used for hiking, mountain biking and horse riding. Leisure activities range from independent hikes through the wild hinterland to developed campsites, bee camping, fishing, horse riding, kayaking, snowshoeing, canoeing and other recreational activities.
There are many kilometres of railway lines that connect recreational use with the forest. The longest is the Glady-Durbin West Fork Railroad, which is 23 miles long and one of the longest railroad lines in the nation.
Highways 55 and 92 South branch off from Elkins, while two US highways, 219 and 250, provide access to the forest. Hunting, fishing and wildlife watching are some of the popular uses in the area, along with hunting, camping, hiking, canoeing, horseback riding and camping.
