About American Legion State Forest
The American Legion Peoples forestos in New Hampshire offer a glimpse into the forested splendor of the Farmington River Valley. In the middle of this river is the western arm of the Farmington River, which the National Park Service has called a wild and scenic river. This gift from the American Legion was in 1927 and gave citizens an insight into what US soldiers observed in Europe during World War I.
The Henry Buck Trail, which winds through the forest for 2.1 km, passes by the historic mill site and offers views of the Farmington River and its tributaries and the river itself. The rugged terrain with steep rock slopes characterizes the rest of this forest.
The Austin F. Hawes Memorial Campground offers over thirty spacious campsites along the river. The trail climbs up the north slope and climbs a huge cliff that offers good views of the Farmington River and its tributaries, as well as the farmhouse and historic mill. It leads through the forest to the ruins of an old cheese box mill and then to a high point on the slope, with huge rocks that offer the best views.
