About Talladega National Forest
Oakmulgee Purchase Unit, located south of Centreville, was established by the National Forest Commission on January 21, 1935. The area was first settled in the early 19th century by a group of settlers from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and other states.
At that time, timber was cut for agricultural purposes and for building houses. Today's Oakmulgee Ranger District has been reduced by about 60 percent by land and about 30 percent by road.
Founded by President Roosevelt, the Talladega National Forest once consisted of more than 1.5 million acres, or about 1,000 square miles. The Talladesga unit was divided into two districts, with Heflin Base in the north and Oakmulgee Base in the south.
The Talladega National Forest has been cleared and developed, with a total of 1.5 million acres (about 1,000 square miles) of forest land. The Talladesga National Forest, the largest of its kind in the United States, has been cleared and is being developed and cleared to be used as a national park and recreation.
