About Hammonasset Beach State Park
A visit to Hammonton Beach State Park is more than just a day at the beach; Connecticut's largest coastal park offers a two-mile stretch of beach for a walk along the water or just relaxing in the sun.
The first colonists arrived in 1639, but the property frequently changed hands between Indians and the first colonists. The first inhabitants of Hammonton Beach State Park, the Hammonton Indians, lived in the area from the 17th century to the early 18th century.
In 1898, the Winchester Repeating Arms Company bought Hammonasset and used it as the base for their Straight Pull rifle. The rifle was mounted on a horse - a stone boat - from which it could be fired up to a distance of 1,000 feet. On July 18, 1920, it was made available to the public by the US Army Corps of Engineers and the New York State Department of Natural Resources.
The first season attracted 75,000 visitors, and the park's reputation attracted tourists from across the continent and the state. During World War II, it was left in the reserves of the US Army and closed to the public.
Meigs Point served as a flight route; planes flew into Clinton Harbor, fired at range, and then flew over Long Island Sound.
It was built in 1955 and the stone was transported by truck from quarries in northern England to the quarry in Clinton Harbor.
Today, more than half a million people visit Hammonton Beach State Park annually, and the center is open seven days a week from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Meigs Point Nature Center offers programs and activities for park visitors during the summer season. As the largest public beach park in Connecticut, Hammonasset has 550 grassy campsites perfect for nature lovers.
Hammonasset State Park also offers a variety of outdoor activities for children and adults, including hiking, biking, canoeing, kayaking, swimming, fishing and much more.
To visit the Nature Center, go through the roundabout, follow the signs to Meigs Point, keep left on the access road and follow it to the center, which is on the left side opposite the Meiges Point bathhouse. Parking is available in front of the building and parking is available in the parking lot at the back of the park, directly on the street.
Note: The Nature Centre's telephone number is seasonal, but on Labor Day weekend you should contact the Park's main office: (855) 888-476-5555, ext.
