Delaware Seashore State Park is described as "water, water everywhere," and although bays, canals, bays and oceans often exhibit natural changes, the forces of wind and water can make barrier islands largely inaccessible. The Indian River Inlet in Delaware, a narrow strip of land on the edge of the mighty Atlantic Ocean, is a popular destination for beach goers. Until the federal government completed two large steel and stone walkways along the banks of the Delaware River in 1939 to stabilize it, transportation across this narrow stretch of land was difficult.

Today, the park is a popular destination for millions of visitors who enjoy the diversity of water - related activities that are offered along the Delaware coast. The park's marina is located in Indian River Inlet, just a few hundred meters from the shore, and offers many practical services for boaters and fishermen. The Indian River Marina vacation rentals are located on the south side of the beach, next to the Delaware Seashore State Park parking lot. Delaware State Parks, a division of the Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection, began operating the Delaware coast in 1965.

The park is home to the Delaware Seashore National Wildlife Refuge, the largest of its kind in the United States. Visitors can swim, sail, kayak, paddle, canoe, boat and paddle, and hike and cycle along the park's sandy beaches.

In July, the park also hosts a popular sand castle competition, where amateur artists create unique sculptures and castles to win prizes. There are group activities for family and friends, and summer offers a variety of outdoor activities, such as the first ever Delaware Seashore Summer Camp. The cottages are located on the beach, on the main campsite of the park or in one of the many private cottages. First - come, served first, open to the public, free, for all ages, without parking fees for visitors.
