About Assateague State Park

Maryland's only marine park is located on Assateague Island, a barrier island bordering the Atlantic Ocean. Two miles of beach offer views of the Chesapeake Bay and the Blue Ridge Mountains to the east, and a bay on the island offers canoeing in the secluded bay.

The swamps are home to a variety of wildlife, including deer and wild horses, as well as a large number of birds. In 1994, Assateague was named one of the ten most beautiful U.S. national parks by National Geographic Travel Magazine. Maryland State Park is part of the Maryland National Park System and a member of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The park is located on the east side of Assateague Island in the Chesapeake Bay, north of Baltimore, Maryland. The park stretches from the Atlantic Ocean, the Delaware River and the East Coast of Maryland and Virginia.
