About Trap Pond State Park

A freshwater wetland area that once covered large parts of southwestern Sussex County and is one of the oldest and largest freshwater wetlands in the world.

The pond was built to operate a sawmill for harvesting large cypresses in the area, and later the pond and surrounding farmland was purchased by the federal government in 1930. The Civil Defense Corps began developing the area for recreation, and Trap Pond became one of the first state parks in Delaware in 1951. The Trap Pond State Park preserves the pristine beauty of this secret swamp and hosts a variety of outdoor activities including hiking, fishing, kayaking, canoeing, camping and fishing.

Visitors have the opportunity to explore the natural beauty of this wetland, and birdwatching is a popular activity. Attentive hikers can observe a variety of birds such as spotted woodpeckers, jays, hawks, owls, eagles and other birds of prey. Hiking trails surround the pond and offer the opportunity to see many different species of wildflowers and flowering plants as well as birds and mammals.

Experience the wonders of the southern forest on the 4.9 km long border path that borders the park's 90 hectare pond. The Baldcypress Nature Centre offers a variety of shows and programmes that will enrich any visit to this park. In addition to the natural beauty of Trap Pond State Park, the parks also offer a variety of recreational activities.

A picnic area overlooking the pond and three gazebos can be reserved for group events. Children will enjoy a playground, and volleyball courts and horseshoe pits encourage active competition with friends.

Two primitive campsites are also available for youth groups, but only by reservation. Visitors who want to stay in the park can camp at one of the two primitive campsites, one on the west side of Trap Pond. Tents and recreational vehicles can be placed under tall mountain pines, yurts are also available in all parks for up to four people, with a maximum capacity of six people per tent or two per vehicle.

Yurts are a fun and simple alternative to pitching tents, but still give you the rustic feeling of camping outdoors. They are bees with canvas walls that provide a comfortable and comfortable sleeping area for up to four people, perfect for a new motorhome family.

Trap Pond State Park manages 2,685 acres of land that provides recreational opportunities for the public. Nearby Trussum Pond is known nationwide for its picturesque views of the Atlantic Ocean and James Branch Nature Preserve, home to the state's largest beam cypress downstream from Trap and Trussedum Ponds. The Barnes Woods nature reserve also offers self-guided nature trails, as well as hiking and cycling trails. Trap Pond also offers tent huts for your enjoyment, along with picnic tables, picnic areas, picnic area, tent hut and boat ramp.

Guests will enjoy a beautiful wonderland of spectacular beauty at Trap Pond State Park, home to one of the state's largest beam cypress forests.

The boat ramp offers space for small motorboat trips and park interpreters offer pontoon boat tours and stories. Sailing through the barren cypresses is a popular pastime in the park and during the summer season you can rent a rowing boat.

If you want to explore the swamps inland, one of the streams that flow into the Trap Pond is marked with a path for those who want to. Fishermen on water and on land can land perch, pickerle, cappie and bluefin, as well as fish from ponds and streams.
