About Delnor-Wiggins Pass State Park

The park's miles of white-sand beaches are considered one of the nation's best, and host a variety of bird species, reptiles, amphibians, birds of prey and mammals. A popular activity is fishing on the beach at Wiggins Pass, where swimming is not allowed. The beach is a popular destination for kayaking, canoeing, hiking, camping, fishing and other activities.

Divers can explore the harsh underwater reefs of the Gulf and kayakers can paddle in the estuary. Boaters can drop off their boats at Wiggins Pass to sail to the coast or start from the beach at the park's jetty and from nearby beaches.

To avoid overcrowding during the busy winter season, the park closes its doors when it reaches its maximum capacity. At the northern end of the island, a tower offers visitors a view of Wiggins Pass and the surrounding coastal region. The hotel is located on a steep hill on the north side of the Delnor Pass, right on the beach.

The Seminole Indians and early European settlers found refuge on the island at the end of the 19th century after the arrival of the first settlers from Europe. The Kalusa Indians flourished in this area by hunting, fishing and fishing for food and medicines.

Joe Wiggins, after whom the passport is named, was the first innkeeper to register and run a small trading post. The land was purchased as a park in Collier County, but the Department of Recreation and Parks bought the land from the county to develop it into a state park. After completion of the development, the pass was officially opened to the public in 1981.
