About Onaway State Park
Onaway State Parks is pleased to announce that canoes, kayaks and rowing boats can be rented in the park during the summer season. Boats will be available for half and full day tours, and hotels are located in the parking lot of the Onaway Hotel on the west side of Onway State Park. For any questions regarding renting, please contact the National Park Office at (888) 562-5555 or the hotel's telephone number at (1) 877-467-3200.
Reservations for the new Onaway Hotel on the west side of Onway State Park are now accepted. The area includes rugged, picturesque land that includes a cobbled beach, a small stream and a number of small lakes and rivers. This park has behaved well in recent years, without major incidents or incidents in the last three years.
Campers must bring their own beds, crockery and cookware, and up to six people can sleep in a single room at the Onaway Hotel on the west side of Onway State Park.
The 400 square meter cabins are located in a designated swimming area on the west side of Onaway State Park. In February, Onway hosts a festival that includes boat rides, music, food and entertainment, as well as other activities for children and adults.
The park was inaugurated in 1921 and purchased by Presque Isle County and a private donor. The Chippewa Indians who once visited the area are located in an area bordering Onaway State Park on the west side of the lake.
Black Lake is Michigan's seventh largest lake, covering 10,130 hectares and teeming with wildlife including birds, fish, birds of prey, reptiles, amphibians and birds. The boat mooring in the park offers access to the lake and a range of other leisure activities. Enclosed park pavilions overlooking the Black Lake are available for group activities and family celebrations.
A small fee is charged for access to the park's reserved buildings, such as the ONAway State Park Museum and Black Lake Visitor Center.
Hikers can visit the natural features of the park and its surroundings, and some trails are prepared for cross-country skiing.
The park has a variety of natural and historical attractions, and nearby are the Waterfalls, an underground river (part of the Ocqueoc River) that emerges from a slope and plunges over rocks, waterfalls and trees to the riverbed. The falls are located just 10 miles east of this park and a short walk downstream there is a small waterfall.
15 miles south of this park are Shoepac Lake and Tomahawk Lakes, both bounded by the Ocqueoc River and Great Lakes to the north, and Lake O'Hare and Lake Huron to the east and west.
Shoepac Lake itself is a deep sinkhole filled with water, and the nearby town of Onaway is named after the sturgeon capital of Michigan. Known for good fishing, the area is also known for sinkholes, which occur when a spring erodes soft rocks and bends the surface. Today they are filled with trees, flowers and wildlife, but they are still visible from the shore.
