About Washington Crossing State Park
On December 25, 1776, the icy waters of the Delaware River provided the perfect backdrop for the opening of Washington Crossing State Park in Delaware County, Delaware.
On December 25, 1776, General George Washington and the Continental Army landed in what is now Washington Crossing State Park after crossing the harsh winter river at night. Around the clock in the morning the battle for Trenton began, where the Hessian troops had been defeated in an unexpected attack. The battle was quickly followed by a series of skirmishes in New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware and Delaware County. At the end of the first day of fighting, however, they seemed overwhelmed by hunger and cold and had little to celebrate.
Although originally preserved for its historical importance, the park is also known for its hiking trails and wildlife habitat. A large number of migratory birds use the gorge as a resting and nesting place, and numerous bird watching and bird watching routes have been established.
Among the most notable species are white and deer, red and shoulder falcons. The park has a wonderful variety of spring and summer wildflowers. The park offers a wide range of plants, including grasses, shrubs and trees, as well as many bird species, mammals, reptiles and amphibians.
On December 25, 1776, the icy waters of the Delaware River provided the perfect backdrop for the opening of Washington Crossing State Park in Delaware County. The park is also named after an existing path, the Washington Crossing Trail, a 1.5-mile-wide, 1.5-meter-long trail through the park.
On December 25, 1776, General George Washington and the Continental Army landed in Trenton, New Jersey after crossing a severe winter river at night that led through the severe winter river into what is now Washington Crossing State Park. The battle followed quickly and around the clock in the morning they began their march to Trenton, where they were defeated in an unexpected attack by the Hessian troops. A few days before Christmas, the first day of New Year's celebrations in New York City, it seemed that hunger and cold were outstripping them, leaving them with little to celebrate Christmas with.
The park offers a variety of group campsites for families and groups up to 10 people, as well as a number of picnic areas. The main campsite in Washington Crossing State Park can accommodate 125 people and offers accommodation, playgrounds and play equipment.
Groups of 20 or more must reserve a picnic area at least five days in advance, and such use is only permitted on public holidays as authorized by the superintendent.
Reservations for picnic areas are handled by individual parking offices, and the route is not barrier-free. The Washington Crossing State Park picnic area on the east side of the park is the only picnic area of its kind in Washington state.

General Washington and other officers used the house as their base of operations as they crossed the Delaware coast on Christmas night. The living room, bedroom and textile room were furnished with furniture from the local period, which was probably used by the Johnson family from 1740 to 1770. It belonged to Garret Johnson, who ran a small textile factory in the 17th century on the site of what is now Washington Crossing State Park.
The property also includes an 18th century kitchen and garden, and the original stone and brick walls of the house date back to the late 17th century.
