About Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park Trail

The Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park is a great place for hiking, biking, horseback riding, canoeing, kayaking and fishing. The canal trawls are part of the national recreational trail system, and the 70-mile linear park is a valuable wildlife corridor that connects fields and forests.

The main canal passes Port Mercer Canal House in the charming villages of Griggstown and Blackwells Mills, ends in New Brunswick and you can rent a canoe from private concessionaires in Grigglestown or Princeton. The canal is a major attraction for history lovers with its cobbled overflows and hand-built stone arcades. On the way to Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park you can also pass the upper part of the feeder canal.

Most of the canal system is still intact from the days when the cargo depended on mule and steam tractors, but along the canals there are still many historic buildings.

There are no restrictions on boat or canoe rides along the canals, but there are restrictions on boats and canoes on trips up and down the canal. Boat regulations apply in New Jersey and there is no engine restriction on the rivers, but you can moor your boat and rent it from private concessionaires in Griggstown and Princeton.

Fishing is permitted along the entire length of the canal, but the Department of Fish and Wildlife has filled the canals at the source of each canal. Fishermen are found on the Delaware and Raritan Canals in Griggstown and Princeton, as well as in New Jersey and New York.

Fishing on canals and rivers is regulated by the New Jersey Division of Fish and Wildlife. Fishing is also permitted on the Delaware River, but only on a limited number of canals and rivers in the state of Delaware.

Informal picnics are allowed on the canals, picnic tables and barbecues are located at access points near historic sites. Open fires are not allowed, and charcoal fires are limited to the barbecue and picnic areas.

The main canal route, which is 34 miles long, is ADA accessible, and all trails and multi-purpose trails are suitable for all ages and physical abilities.

The site is leased and operated by the Delaware River Mill Society, which sponsors concerts and other local programs. Canoes can be rented on the canal for private canoe rentals, and along the canals there are linseed oil canoes, kayaks, pedal boats and kayaks for rent.

The Griggstown Lock is located less than a mile south of the path, which is bounded to the north by the Delaware River and the Raritan River, to the south by the Riverfront Trail and to the east by both channels to a point north of New Castle.

A short walk leads to a grassy area with picnic tables and barbecues, and the park hosts several annual events, including the annual Delaware and Raritan River House of the River Festival.

Giggstown and Blackwell Mills are located on the Millstone River near the D & R Canal and are accessible from the Delaware and Raritan River State Park parking lots. Picnic tables and barbecues are set up on a large field overlooking the river. This historic site offers access to the canal path and river, as well as access from both the Mills River and canal tugs.

There is horse and trailer parking in the Delaware and Raritan River State Park parking lot and the Six Mile Run Reservoir Trailhead is located near the office. The park office is located on the west side of the D & R Canal, next to the Millstone River Trailhead.

Six Mile Run Reservoir Site is one of the most hidden recreational resources in Delaware and in the Raritan River State Park for hiking, biking and horseback riding. The 3000 hectare reservoir area is rich in cultural and historical significance and also hosts a variety of wildlife such as deer, elk, elk, coyote, birds, squirrels and other wildlife. There is a hardwood forest in the Heathcote Brook area of Kingston and a short walk takes visitors through the forest and into a small pond.

The main canal runs from Trenton to New Brunswick with a break at the intersection of Route 1, and the feeder canal extends north of Frenchtown to the Delaware River in Trentons. Parking is available in designated parking spaces along the canal drag and also on the banks of the Raritan River and in the park.
