About Elk Knob State Park

Currently, there is a moose button at the top of Elk Knob State Park in Elk County, North Dakota, and currently there are no moose buttons at the top of Elk Mountain, the highest point of the park.

The summit can be reached via a newly created hiking trail from the foot of the mountain, which has access to the hiking trail.

The Elk Knob State Nature Reserve is home to a very diverse flora, with a variety of plants and animals. The rich, sweet soil is extracted from weathered amphibolite and metamorphic rocks, and the area hosts a natural community that is rare, rarer than rare. In nature we find a great variety of endangered plants such as wildflowers, shrubs, trees, grasses, ferns and other plant species as well as many bird species.

The North Fork New River is considered one of the oldest rivers in the world and originates in Elk Knob State Park and the surrounding amphibolite mountains known as ElkKnob.

On the summit of Elk Knob there is a northern deciduous forest, which shows a subspecies of the beech gap. The trees growing on the northern slope of the summit at ElkKnob are gnarled and stunted by the harsh weather conditions. This northern deciduous forest, typically located at an altitude of 4,000 feet, is mainly made up of oaks, birches, pines, elms, pines and oaks, as well as a few other species.

The forest outcrops support breeding ravens and a number of neotropic songbirds, and the rugged mountain area is inhabited by white-tailed deer, elk, elk, coyote, bear, wolf, and mountain goat.

Many animal and plant species, including several rare and endangered species, are protected from development today, and Elk Knob State Park helps them all to protect. In 2003, the State of North Carolina transferred control of the park and its land and water resources to the State Department of Parks and Recreation, under the direction of its Natural Resources Division.

At 520 feet above sea level, Elk Knob Abbey is one of the highest peaks in Watauga County and offers spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. At the top of the peak, hikers can look over the landscape and imagine a time when elk grazed the valley in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Before they disappeared from the region due to overfishing and habitat loss, they roamed the mountains. The last native elk in North Carolina were probably killed in the late 17th century.

From the 1850s to the end of the 20th century, people from near and far brought their goods to the meat warehouses community, where they were processed. A few miles away, Sutherland's cattle business was thriving and Elk Knob State Park was surrounded by his farm.

This small, bustling, dynamic community has brought a rich history to the Watauga County area and has a strong connection to Elk Knob State Park and its visitors. Every September, ElkKnob State Park hosts a community dinner where residents of this shrinking community gather to eat together, tell their stories, and share photos from the past.

This free event, open to the public, offers visitors the opportunity to learn about what things were like before the development of modern inventions. Elk Knob State Park has recently opened a backcountry campsite where you can enjoy live music and show the practice that has been common in the history of moose buttons.
